Cheesecake problems, diagnosed

First identify when the crack appeared. A cheesecake that browns around the edge, rises strongly, then cracks while baking is most consistent with overbaking or too much incorporated air. A smooth cake that cracks only after it leaves the oven points more toward rapid cooling and contraction. If the edge sets hard while the center stays very loose, uneven baking is the stronger clue. The fix is not simply 'bake less': use room-temperature ingredients, mix gently, bake evenly, and stop at the correct custard-like doneness point.
