Creamy herb-flecked ranch dressing with fresh chives, dill and parsley

Before you start

What this method is trying to achieve

Treat buttermilk as the texture control, not as a fixed dump-in ingredient. Mix the thick mayonnaise-sour-cream base first, add herbs and seasoning, then whisk in buttermilk only until the dressing reaches the consistency you want.

Success looks like

Know the target before you cook

The ranch should be creamy and pourable, coating salad leaves without running like milk or sitting as a stiff dip.

Ingredients

What you need

Base

  • 120 g mayonnaise
  • 120 g sour cream

Liquid

  • 60 ml buttermilk — plus more only as needed

Herbs

  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp fresh chives, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp fresh dill, finely chopped

Seasoning

  • 1 clove garlic, mashed to a paste
  • 1 tsp white wine vinegar
  • 0.5 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 0.5 tsp kosher salt
  • 0.25 tsp freshly ground black pepper

Method

Cook by the cues, not just the clock

Build base

  1. Whisk mayonnaise and sour cream until completely smooth.

Add flavor

  1. Whisk in parsley, chives, dill, garlic, vinegar, Worcestershire, salt and pepper.

Thin gradually

  1. Whisk in half the buttermilk, then add the rest a tablespoon at a time until the dressing is creamy and pourable.

Chill

  1. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours so the herbs hydrate and the dressing is judged cold.

Final adjustment

  1. Stir and taste. Add a teaspoon of buttermilk at a time only if the chilled dressing is too thick.

Critical checkpoints

Stop here and check

texture

Before buttermilk: base thick?

Mayonnaise and sour cream form a thick smooth base.

If the base is already loose, use less thinning liquid.

other

After chilling: pourable, not watery?

The dressing falls from a spoon in a thick ribbon.

Only add more buttermilk after the cold texture is known.

other

Ranch too thin?

The dressing runs like milk or cannot cling to salad.

Use ranch-dressing-too-thin to check buttermilk, base thickness, acid, chilling and wet herbs.

Storage, reheating & substitutions

Storage

Refrigerate promptly in a clean covered container and keep cold.

Reheating

Not applicable. Serve chilled.

Substitutions

Use Greek yogurt for part of the sour cream for a tangier variation. Dried herbs can replace fresh herbs in smaller amounts.
